Financial Management in Turbulent Times

Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. (Matthew 7:24–27 NIV)

It is self-evident that building a house, or any structure, on sand will not work, for when the inevitable storm comes, the foundation will fail. We all know this reality in the world of construction, but what about in building organizations?

The storms that organizations must endure are not primarily bad weather or earthquakes or fires, although these calamities can certainly cause difficulties for organizations. Rather, the most difficult calamities that organizations face are typically economic in nature.

For example, consider the financial consequences that organizations must bear for health care costs for people who make poor lifestyle choices; increased government regulation; the impact of increased advertising costs due to skyrocketing fees for celebrity endorsements; and the implications for increased state, federal, and local taxes (it seems that government, at all levels, is in the red, so increased taxes appear to be inevitable). These and many other issues are placing increasing financial pressure on organizations. Plus, financial storms often make it necessary for companies to raise their prices, which impacts their ability to compete in the global marketplace.

I think it is fair to say that economic factors such as these produce a very turbulent workplace environment. So how does one build an organization so that it can withstand economic storms?

The text provides us a clue. The key to building any organization on a solid foundation is to build based on obedience to the words of Christ, that is, according to a biblical worldview. How does one do that? May I suggest seven keys that will facilitate alignment with a biblical worldview?

  1. ____________ is not surprised.
  2. ____________ is in reality.
  3. The real risk is _________________.
  4. The only ___________ is in _______________.
  5. ____________ as unto the Lord.
  6. Keep your _____________ open.
  7. A_______ S ________ K________!

To fill in the blanks, please listen to the audio teaching Financial Management in Turbulent Times. Click on the link below. As you listen to this teaching, keep in mind that if God created the universe, then He has the right to define the rules; hence, success in God’s universe is the result of obeying His rules. Therefore building any organization on secular principles will not produce enduring success. The only way to build an organization that can endure the inevitable financial storms of life is based on obedience to the words of Christ, that is, a biblical worldview.

Here is your business tip. Make it a priority in your organization to teach and train everyone in a biblical worldview of life and work. This should be considered basic training for your organization. Any workers who refuse to submit to this training should be released or they will become cancer in your organization. There are enough challenges from the financial storms of life; don’t allow cancer from within your organization to exacerbate the turbulence from financial storms. Finally, faithfully apply the seven keys noted in the audio teaching. These keys will enable you and your organization to be more adroitly aligned with a biblical worldview, which will protect you during turbulent times and will facilitate enduring success.
