Techniques for Survival in Today’s Uncertain World

"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." ( Matthew 7:24–27 NIV)

Just as there are seasons in a year, there are also seasons in business and economic matters. Uncertain times come and go in our uncertain world.

No one likes uncertainty. It leads to fear and, many times, panic. It drives us to seek something that is stable and certain.

Many believe that government is the only source of business and economic stability. They argue that nothing is capable of withstanding the uncertainties of life except government. The assumption is that the antidote to uncertainty and instability is more resources; and because government has the power to tax and/or borrow money to increase its resources at will, only government can produce stability. Now at a time when financial institutions are failing, the government is seeking to provide stability by borrowing money to pump into those financial institutions.

A quick look at history, however, suggests that there is really no stability with any government. Consider, for example, the collapse of countries such as Iceland, Russia, and Germany—all within the past seventy years. Or consider the collapse of the Roman Empire nearly two thousand years ago. And, of course, there was the ancient nation of Israel—God’s chosen people—whose country the Babylonians ravaged nearly three thousand years ago. The common denominator of all these situations was misalignment with God.

These anecdotal examples illustrate a fundamental principle of stability in God’s universe: true stability is only found in God. Economic calamity is one of the ways that God responds to those who disobey Him. Likewise, economic blessings are afforded those who obey Him.

But even when men obey God, there are still calamities in life. The text above presents God’s way for surviving the inevitable storms of life—to build your life based on obedience to the teachings of Christ. This means that those living in obedience to God are doubly blessed. They are positioned for financial blessings and prepared for difficult times. Either way, those who live in obedience to God can enjoy stability and certainty in an unstable and uncertain world.

No amount of government intervention can produce the stability and certainty that comes from alignment with the teachings of Christ.

Here is your business tip. To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is the greatest survival technique and is also the greatest way to prosper. True disciples of Christ obey God on two levels. First, they learn and practice a biblical worldview. And second, they search out and fulfill God’s specific purpose for their lives. In this way they build their lives on the rock—Christ—and can withstand the inevitable storms of life and will enjoy the economic favor of God. Become a disciple of Christ and seek to help others become disciples of Christ. And if you want your work activity to be as profitable as possible, work with others who are also disciples of Christ.
