Business Tips from a Biblical Worldview

Biblical Worldview of Business

And Elisha prayed, "O LORD, open his eyes so he may see." Then the LORD opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kings 6:17 NIV)

What is the nature of reality?  It is easy for most of us to acknowledge that there is a spiritual dimension to life, particular in regard to personal, family, and church life. But what about business?

Business seems to take place exclusively in the physical realm. Buying, selling, producing, and servicing all happen in a very tangible way. How could the intangible spiritual realm connect to the tangible world of business?

Keep in mind that God, a spirit being, created the physical universe.  Hence, the physical realm emanated from the spiritual realm. The physical realm is simply the external outward expression of the intangible reality of the spiritual realm. Also, this means that the physical dimension is subordinated to the spiritual dimension. As an illustration of this, consider the text above, 2 Kings 6:17.

A hostile foreign army surrounded Elisha’s house. Elisha's servant panicked because it appeared that they were going to be captured or killed. Against this context, Elisha asked the Lord to show his servant reality—not what could be seen in the tangible physical dimension, but what was really happening in the spiritual dimension. The servant's eyes were opened to see the overwhelming army of the Lord surrounding the foreign army. And since the spirit realm trumps the physical, there was no reason for panic or concern.

We need to learn to connect what we see and experience in the tangible physical reality with the intangible spiritual reality. We must recognize that physical reality is nothing more than the manifestation of the underlying spiritual reality. So if you want to change the physical circumstances of your life, change the spiritual dimension of your life.

Here is your business tip: A biblical worldview of business embraces this truth. The tangible results experienced in business are all driven by the intangible spirit realm, which is why lasting success in business only happens when organizations line up with the philosophy, values, and principles consistent with God’s character and nature.
